Scholarships

The Surf City Kiwanis Club of Santa Cruz is pleased to announce the winners of our four first-year college scholarships for 2018, each in the amount of $1,000.  Applications were received from seniors graduating this spring from three area high schools: Harbor, Santa Cruz, & Soquel (none rec'd this year from Pacific Collegiate). Each scholarship is targeted for a student planning to study a specific major; the four students who were selected for this year's scholarships are as follows:

  • The Melissa Smith Memorial Scholarship:  to provide assistance for a student who desires to follow the field of DANCE, DRAMA or the ARTS was awarded to Rana Aziz of Harbor High.
  • The Herb Reid Memorial Scholarship:  to provide assistance for a student who will pursue a career in MEDIA/COMMUNICATION was awarded to Madison Gotthardt of Soquel High.
  • The Mas Sugimoto Memorial Scholarship:  to provide assistance to a student who will pursue a career in ENGINEERING was awarded to Sophie Parsa of Santa Cruz High.
  • The Ken and Ruby Marion Memorial Scholarship: to provide assistance for a student who will pursue a career in BUSINESS was awarded to Alexandra Meyer of Soquel High.

All scholarship applications had to be submitted through their high school counselor’s office, who then selected no more than ONE student application submittal for each of the four scholarships.  Selection was then made by the Scholarship Committee of the Surf City-Santa Cruz Kiwanis Foundation, subject to the final approval of the Foundation's Board of Directors.  This year we accepted applications until Friday, April 13, 2018.  Scholarships were then awarded in early May so presentations could be made at each school's annual scholastic achievement/Senior Grad night event.

Each application includes the student's essay, faculty & volunteer program letters of recommendation, the student's official transcript and their SAT or ACT score, with consideration based on the following criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Community involvement
  • Demonstrated leadership
